Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM®) has been the source
for education, resources, information and membership for real estate
management professionals for over 70 years. An affiliate of the
National Association of Realtors®, IREM is the only professional
real estate management association serving both the multi-family
and commercial real estate sectors. With 81 U.S. chapters, eight
international chapters, and several other partnerships around the
globe, IREM is an international organization that serves as an advocate
on issues affecting the real estate management industry.

The Leadership Ladder: Influence is within your reach.

Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Queen Elizabeth, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr,
Mother Theresa, Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela all have something in common. They are
deemed to be some of the most influential humans that have lived or are still living. They knew
the power of their influence, and they used it to change the world for better. You do not have to
like what their influence was or what they influenced people to do, but they were able to cast a
vision and influenced millions of others to do as they envisioned and directed.
The point is that influence is powerful. Darren Hardy (publisher, Success Magazine) said
that the same qualities and charisma that can influence people toward human enlightenment can also be used to influence people to destruction and great inhumanity. You do not have to be standing on a mountaintop speaking profound parables or pumping your fists on a lectern while shouting into a microphone in front of legions of people to be influential. We all have a sphere of influence. We are inlluencing people daily through our conduct, actions, thoughts, philosophies, character, and speeches. We are touching lives daily either in our homes, communities, work places, businesses, conferences, seminars, churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, government social events, in our children's schools and other academic institutions.
John Maxwell said that leadership is influence, but in my own opinion, leadership is more
than influence, it is positive influence. Influence is gained with people in levels. The higher the
level, the more positive influence you exert in your circle of influence. As we enter rooms, mix
with people, talk with people, we have an opporlunity to make a difference and bring
enlightenment to that person. You must be ready to climb that leadership ladder and get to the
high point where you have the ability to direct others by positive influence. Dr Myles Munroe in
his book "becoming a leader" said it may take the form of the influence of one friend on another,
one spouse on another, aparcnt on a child, a teacher on students, a pastor on a congregation,
a supervisor on employees, a community leader on volunteers and so on."
As members of IREM, influence is within your reach. It is in the places where you work,
in the friends you make at chapter events, the acquaintances you renew at national conference
and seminars, the friends of IREM you network with, the business associates you deal with
everyday. They are your circle of influence. Your circle of influence is even bigger than you
thought! Your influence is in a growing intemational organization of more than 18,000 leaders in
real estate management, respected for our nearly 80 years of maximizing the potential of the
assets we manage. Your circle of influence is in the network of 80 United States Chapters and 14 International local chapters located in China, Russia, Brazll,Korea, Japan, Canadaand growing.
The question you need to ask yourself, are you using your influence positively. Positive
use of your influence will involve growing your chapter by inviting someone to a chapter event
from your circle of influence, identi$ring companies and business IREM can visit to speak about
IREM and its many benefits, sponsoring a student from many of the colleges offering real estate
degree programs within our region to a chapter meeting and participate on seminars and other
learning opportunities to stay abreast of the latest industry trends and information.

The influence you exert is through your own life, and what you've become yourself." John
Quincy Adams, sixth president of the United States, said "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."
